OffShoot Newsletter - 27th January 2018

This Monday 29th January we have Assignment #4 Hand-In (See details of what you need to hand-in in the Competition / Assignment section below) and a Strobe & Lights Practical Demonstration.

Michelle LaGrue and her business partner Fran (https://nicelight.eu/) will do a demonstration using flash, off-camera flash and move to accessories and studio lighting.

They will be doing all the shots tethered and we will be able to see the images immediately on the screen.

David Whitaker will also be showing his successful Fellowship panel.

Congratulations to Roseanne Baume on getting the 1st Place and an HM at the IPF Dublin & South Leinster Regional Photographer of the Year (POTY) awards in the Advanced Colour Print Open section. Roseanne will be showing us her Fellowship panel at the meeting on the 5th February.

Before that, tomorrow Sunday, there is a Motocross outing at Sandy Valley motocross. Racing starts at 10 am. You will need a telephoto lens preferably with a minimum of 70-200mm and a general purpose lens A monopod may help and raingear, warm clothing and a pair of stout shoes or boots. Photo Boxes

David Whitaker has asked if any members are interested in getting black carry boxes for 20x16 images. Buying them in bulk reduces the cost considerably.

The full cost is €50. This is reduced to €40 if 5 or more are ordered. This price is for the largest 6-inch deep case. He is happy to take orders for boxes from members and buy in bulk.

January Blues

Some facts seen online recently caught my eye:

• The average time that people study exhibits in a museum is 28 seconds.

• The average attention span of a human being is about 6 seconds, less than that of a goldfish.

• Still images on the TV are rarely shown for more than 3 seconds.

Also, looking at website statistics for a photographic site I noticed that 80% of the views were from smartphones.

Are we becoming visually illiterate?

Can we cope with only the briefest encounter with photographs?

Should I change the imagery I create knowing it will viewed for less than 6 seconds on a smartphone?

Setting up before the Meetings

Tony Jobling and David Whitaker have done this role for over 4 years now and would like a break. If you can assist with this role please either speak to Tony or David or email secretary@offshoot.ie. Tony and David will be around to do full handover/training so you won't be dropped in the deep end.

Annual Subscription 2018

Please ensure you renew your membership by paying your subscription by 28th February 2018.

The subscription can be paid at the door before the meetings either in either cash or via a cheque made out to 'OffShoot Photography Society'.

2018 AGM Report Back

Thanks to all that attended the AGM last Monday. We managed to get through a lot on the night with the 2017 Report Back, the adoption of a new constitution and the election of the 2018 Committee.

Help with Ideas for Outings

Your new outings committee consists of Robbie O’Leary, Sylvia Hick and Mike Smith and they need your help. They are working on the schedule of outings for 2018 and to aid them in putting together a calendar of outings please reply to their email or email outings@offshoot.ie with answers to the following questions:

Forthcoming competitions/critiques are as follows:

January 29th Assignment #4 Hand-in, with the critique on 5th February.

Please bring all the images you submitted for the assignment during 2017 with your final entry on the 29th January. Please take care to place your entries as a group into the boxes. You should identify each image with your name and the order in which you submitted them (eg My Name 1/4,2/4,3/4 4/4).

Then Kyle Tunney will be able to see all your entries together (even better if you attach a label with thumbnails on the rear, highlighting the current entry).

The first competition hand in will be on the 19th February 2018 and is a projected competition. The judge will be Ita Martin who presented to the club on 15th January. (Ita's Flickr site is https://www.flickr.com/photos/80011528@N08.)

The theme is ‘Nature and Wildlife’. There are 2 sections B&W and Colour. You may submit up to 2 (two) entries in total. The entries can be distributed one in each section or 2 in one section.

Submission Options

Name your images in the format ‘Membership No’ – ‘Image Title’ e.g. 101-My Image.jpg.

Krass Clement | The Light Gleams an Instant: Photographs from Ireland, Gallery of Photography (Last 2 days - Closes Sunday)

Danish artist Krass Clement’s photographic work emerges from two traditions: Scandinavian melancholy and the ‘flaneur’ tradition from the Parisian school. Clement’s work is concerned with reflecting interior states of mind rather than with documenting real-life situations. His dark, stripped-back aesthetic combines with a stream of consciousness approach to evoke introspective, psychological landscapes that sit somewhere between fiction and reality

Drum was photographed over a single evening in a small pub in Drum, County Monaghan. With only a few rolls of film (and a rumoured five pints of Guinness), Clement created one of the most important contributions to the international canon of contemporary photo books. Through subtle shifts in focus and masterful filmic sequencing, the book comes to concentrate on one principal character in the shadowy pub: a hunched, weather-beaten man sitting alone with his drink. The work is a quiet meditation on community, the outsider, alienation and the terrors of being alone.

The exhibition also includes the world premiere of work made in Dublin in 1991.

Photographer Of The Year Updates

The national finals of the IPF Nature Photographer of the Year competition will be held on Saturday the 17th February with the IPF Photographer of the Year competition on Sunday the 18th February 2018.
