News
This Monday 23rd April we have the judging for our second competition of the year. The judge this time  is Malcolm McCamley.

Last Monday we had a very successful Car Boot sale. Not only did we get the opportunity to empty our cupboards, but also the chance to fill them back up again.  Our thanks to Helen for putting so much energy and effort into getting this inaugural event off the ground.
Our thanks also to Olive Gaughan and Robbie O'Leary for presenting their successful A panels. Some great words of wisdom shared also.  We will present other successful panels over the next few weeks.

IFA 2019 Calendar Competition
IFA has teamed up with the Irish Farmers Journal and Irish Country Living to bring you the 12th annual IFA Calendar Competition.

What makes a winner?
The theme of this year’s calendar is ‘My Land’.
We are looking for fresh, clear and captivating photographs that show the magic or rural Ireland. The ‘My Land’ theme includes anything you think captures the beauty and magic of life in rural Ireland, including livestock, landscapes, farm buildings, farm yards and more!
A monthly winner will be chosen each month, with their winning entry published in the Farmers Journal! At the end of the year, an overall winner will be chosen, along with a runner up voted for on the Irish Farmers Journal Facebook.

The Prizes!
If your photo catches the Judges’ eyes as one of the overall monthly winners, you can look forward to your picture being published in the 2019 IFA calendar as well as a two-night stay in a luxurious Irish Country Hotel with a full Irish breakfast each morning.
The overall winner will be chosen by our judges and receive a prize of €2,000. The second will be chosen by public vote on the Irish Farmers Journal Facebook page, and will receive a prize of €500.

Submitting Your Photos
Digital versions are the preferred option and must be a minimum of 2 megabytes in size (decompressed). JPEG & TIF formats can compress file sizes so they may appear smaller depending on amount of compression selected.
Pictures should be in landscape format and must come with a title, along with the name, address and phone number of the photographer. Also, it must clearly state where the photograph was taken. The more relevant the photo is to the time of the year, the better. Remember, this is for a calendar! Entry form and details available at https://www.ifa.ie/calendarcomp/

Submit your best photos to one of three categories: nature, cities, and people.  [Link]

Showcase of Emerging Irish Photographers

The Osman Suite is a new space for showcasing emerging Irish photographers at Gallery of Photography.

In October 2017 the Gallery of Photography initiated a collaboration with JUNIOR MAGAZINE to search for and support new photography talent. There was such an amazing response to the Open Call that we are organising not one but two installations of emerging photographers in the Osman Suite this year.

Fifteen selected artists will have work printed and produced by Gallery of Photography. Two installations will be on display and prints will be available to purchase during the six-month engagement. Each installation will be for a period of 3 months.

We invite you to come visit this new project, it is a great way for discerning buyers to build up a photography collection from the very best of contemporary emerging talent in Ireland.

Mounted prints are priced at €75 each and are in an edition of 3. All profits go to the artists.

We are delighted to announce that the exhibiting artists (Click on artist name for a link to their website) are:

April - May - June

July - August - September

Kenneth O'Halloran 'Modern Ruins and other stories' to May 20

At the Gallery of Photography

This new exhibition by multi-award-winning photographer Kenneth O’Halloran shows him at the peak of his powers. It focuses on his colour work from Ireland, and centres on a large installation of his magisterial series ‘The Handball Alley’. These now silent structures attest to the passing of time and to the changing dynamics of rural communities. Like the dolmens that John Montague offered as a metaphor for the old people of his childhood, these modern ruins are liminal structures, open-air theatres where the ghosts of a lost civilisation linger.

Ruins of another era – the madness of the Celtic Tiger property boom – are explored in a further colour series, ‘Tales from the Promised Land’. With grim humour, O’Halloran observes the excesses fuelled by cheap credit, and the desecration wrought on the landscape as a culture of greed masquerading as entrepreneurship became normalised.

Elegy and loss are not the over-riding mood of the exhibition. At its emotional core, O’Halloran’s gently probing studies of his parents in his hometown of Corofin celebrate the real and lasting bonds of family and community. Centring on his father, the town’s draper and undertaker, ‘Bodies in Motion’ is a personal and loving portrait of contemporary rural life.

PHOTOIRELAND FESTIVAL 2018 -
1st to 31st May 2018

Conceived in 2008, and celebrating its first edition in 2010, PhotoIreland Festival is Ireland’s first international festival of Photography and Image Culture. It celebrates Ireland’s photographic talents as well as bringing international practitioners and artists to Ireland.

The festival highlights, promotes and elevates Photography in Ireland – conferring on it the importance it duly deserves. With the motto “vibrant, friendly, all-inclusive: a festival for all to enjoy”, we set out to raise awareness for local and international photographers and artists working with Photography, and to underline the work of those organisations and individuals that for years have been promoting an engagement with the medium.
