Judy Reynolds RIP

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Judy this week. Judy passed peacefully after a long illness. Judy was a quiet, friendly person who was a longstanding member having joined in January 2010.

Her Funeral Mass is today 10 am at Lady of Good Counsel Church, Johnstown / Killiney.

Our thoughts are with her husband John and her family at their time of mourning.

Janet Wippell

We are bidding a fond farewell to Janet who
is leaving Ireland for good on 16th October and moving back to Brisbane. She will not be back in the club on Monday nights as she is spending her last 2 weeks with in-laws in Waterford.

We would like to wish her well in this next stage of her life and we will miss her together with the quantity and quality of her contributions to the great images in our competitions.

Next Monday

This coming Monday is a practical night when we’ll be reviewing our own images. We ask all members attending to bring along 2 or 3 of their images. These can be printed or digital. A previous Competition entry or an old Shoot With Me or even small “5×7” size images printed at home or in store.

You can even use your phone, a laptop or tablet. (If you use digital images please note you need to bring the device to show them on as the club will not be providing.)

We will split the attendees into multiple groups of 5 or 6 people who will take 2 or 3 minutes discussing each of their images with each other. After 20-minute intervals, we’ll ask the members to swap groups and repeat the process. (When changing groups you should ensure you join a group with different members than your previous groups.)

The items that members should consider discussing are items like:
1. What were they trying to achieve when taking the image?
2. What do they like about the image?
3. How do they believe the image could be improved or what they would do differently if they had a chance?

The purpose of the evening is to try and look at a number of images objectively to understand what you like to see and take. To get some feedback and to reflect on what you will do next time you take a photo.

Competition

Don’t forget the theme of the next competition is autumn colours. So a good time to get out over the next few weeks and capture those colours as they develop. Competition hand-in is 19 November.

The Lost Moment: Civil Rights, Street Protest and Resistance in Northern Ireland, 1968-69

Symposium and Official Launch at the Gallery of Photography: Thursday 27 September

Running until 4th November, The Lost Moment looks anew at the Civil Rights movement in Northern Ireland fifty years on from the marches and peaceful protests that immediately preceded the Troubles. Curated by Sean O’Hagan, who writes on photography, art and culture for The Guardian and The Observer, the show places the Northern Irish civil rights struggle in the context of the many international street protests that made 1968 such a tumultuous year.
