Next Monday – Competition Judging
On the 12th of May, we will be having an open, printed competition.
The twist is, we, the members will be judging the images through a web app. This is a great opportunity to learn more about judging images. With that in mind, there are some judging guidance tips below to assist with what to think about when you are judging an image, whether that is your own or someone else's.
You will get the opportunity to view the 30+ images submitted to this competition on the Monday night for approximate 40 mins. After this you will be requested to nominate your top four images, from 1st to 4th. This will be done via webpage on your phone. The link for this App will be made available on the night. You will, optionally, be asked for comments on your top selected image.
After the submissions are closed, the votes will be downloaded and counted and a power point presentation will be made of the top rated images and there will be a general discussion.
So remember to bring your phone!
Tips for Assessing Your Images
1.First Impressions Matter
Take a moment to absorb the image before analysing details (Wow factor).
Does it grab your attention? Does it evoke an emotion or tell a story?
2. Technical Quality
Exposure: Well-balanced highlights, shadows, and mid-tones.
Focus & Sharpness: Subject should be in sharp focus unless blur is intentional.
Depth of Field: Appropriate for the subject (shallow for portraits, deep for landscapes, etc.).
Noise & Artefacts: Minimal, unless used creatively.
3. Composition & Framing
Balance: Does the image feel visually balanced?
Rule of Thirds: Is the subject positioned effectively?
Leading Lines & Framing: Do elements guide the viewer’s eye?
Cropping: Does the framing enhance or distract? Any unnecessary empty space?
Shoot With Me Showcase Update
The SWM Showcases are nearly upon us so all images need to be with your group leader so they can be uploaded by this Monday, the 12th May.
The showcases will be held on the following two Monday nights, the 19th and 26th May.
Always an enjoyable night and a big thank you to all participating members and group leaders without whose enthusiasm these Showcases wouldn’t be possible.
Club Exhibition News
The club's annual exhibition will be held in The Lexicon Library, level 4, from July 12th to August 17th. We need to take it down on August 18th. Can members please collect their images on the morning of the 18th, or if that is not possible, can they please get a friend to collect their images for them?
If you would like to take part in the exhibition, please submit up to two images each to the link below before midnight on the 20th June 2025. The topic can be anything. The images will be printed, mounted and framed by Steve at a cost of €30 each.
When submitting images for the exhibition, can members please add a title to the images, as we will have foam title tags for each image, and it looks better if the image has a name rather than a camera-generated file name. Please upload your files in Tiff format, as it means that the image will print really well.
There will be a launch party after the first night of the exhibition.
Please add your images to the Exhibition Dropbox with this link.
If you have any questions, please ask Emily.
