Offshoot Digital Competition

A big thanks to David Sisk for organising this first 'virtual' competition, Dermot Byrne as judge, and behind the scenes support from Katherine and Ian.

We are exploring the possibility of setting up another digital competition.  We will circulate details as soon as we have arrangements in situ and give members plenty of time to prepare entries.

Newsletter Suggestions From Our Members.

Mike Smith reports from the garden. Cocooning Dangerously; Wildlife with a Difference.

"One of the things about being stuck inside is it gives you a lot of time to explore different genres of photography. So, when I decided to go on safari in my suburban garden, I dispensed with the game warden and ventured out alone in search of wildlife. Like the Serengeti you often travel without seeing anything and then it all happens. Suddenly this greenfly leapt out of the rose bush and charged; I fell over, wrecked my knees and split my lip and it then disappeared back into the wilderness before I could get a shot. Since this is the second time in a fortnight that I’ve been similarly assaulted and injured in little game hunting the decision has been taken that I should not again engage in blood sports. Who says cocooning keeps everyone safe!! "

Weekly Theme

The next weekly Offshoot Flickr Theme is  "Mono".

We are looking for images in Mono (which can mean a single colour or just white, grey and black colours).  Your choice. The more experimental the better.

NB 1. Just for clarity. Images used in the weekly Offshoot Flickr themes can be used in club competitions also.

NB 2. Next week's theme will be 'Narrow Depth Of Field' , just to give advance notice and get the creative energies engaged.

Images (mono ) can be posted to our Flickr group from now until next Friday night at 9 pm.  Remember to put "Mono" in the Flickr title field.

This is not a competition but an opportunity to have fun with your camera or post-processing skills or both. These exercises are good for getting us to use our cameras and our minds,  and to look for unusual compositions or situations related to the theme.  Remember there are no judges, no-one checking for over-sharpening, for eyes out of focus or rules of thirds.  We are looking for variety and expression.  Normal Flickr rules apply.

Members do not have to enter every week.  The only condition is that you enter the Theme title  "Mono" at the very beginning of the Title Description field when uploading to Flickr, so we can recognise 'Themed' images. People can continue to post non-themed images to Flickr.

[Note. To join the Offshoot Flickr group, you must first be a Flickr member. Then send the email address used to join Flickr to webmaster@offshoot.ie. You will get an email when you have been added to the group. Please be patient as this is a manual process.]

Virtual Meetings / Presentations Update

We have two possible speakers lined up for a virtual presentation. We will circulate details as soon as arrangements are finalized.

Summary

We wish to emphasize that all of the activities are all optional. The basic idea is to have a few things to focus on to maintain your hobby, continue to develop your skills, familiarity with your equipment. It is an opportunity to experiment and share with others the fruits of your labours.

Furthermore, we can look forward to the eventual demise of this pandemic, knowing that we have an Exhibition and Shoot With Me ln the wings and ready to launch as soon as we have clarity on dates, etc.  We can use both to celebrate the return to more normal times.

NB. SWM and Exhibition notices removed just to simplify the newsletter. We will add back when these events progress.

We are getting super images on our Flickr page, both for themed and more general subjects.  Keep up the good work.
