News

Next Monday Night

John Bermingham will explore the world of "Conceptual Photography".  His talk will include discussing the nature of this genre of photography, demonstrations and examples. He will outline the methodology he uses and insights into his post-processing.

Christmas /  New Year Arrangements

This Monday session is the last speaker event of 2020.  Hard to believe that we are now almost in December. Next week we have the AGM and the following week will be the SWM. We will NOT have a session on the 21st of December.

The last newsletter in 2020 will be on the 18th December and will contain POTW results for the Winter Wildlife theme. We will not be announcing any new weekly themes over the Christmas period until we publish the first newsletter on the weekend of the 9th of January.

We are providing breathing space to capture your Christmas / New Year and holiday photos for presentation on the 11th of January. We will also announce the next competition in early December, with a submission deadline before the end of January.

So there will be plenty of scope for members to explore and capture images, maybe test out some new gear left under the Christmas tree and start to make resolutions on your photographic objectives for 2021.

The first Monday session in 2021 will be the 11th of January. At this event, we will provide an opportunity for members to display their Christmas / New Year photos, introduce the incoming committee, have a general discussion on what 2021 may bring and finish with a general discussion session.

Norman McCloskey

We wish to express our appreciation to Norman's inspirational presentation on creating Landscape Photobooks. We really felt we walked West Cork and Kerry with Norman and would have loved to have followed his footsteps around these wonderful locations. The video of Norman's talk is available in the Member's Area (access described below).

National Shield

The committee has agreed to arrange for exhibition quality printing of our Mono and Colour Shield images. These will be presented to the authors as soon as that can be arranged.  It is unlikely they will be printed before Christmas. We will keep the authors informed of progress on this.

Accessing Video Recordings of Meetings

We've added a new feature to the website. You can now access the recordings of past Zoom meetings from the OffShoot website.

These videos are available in the Videos section of the Member's Area at https://www.offshoot.ie/member-area/. You will need to login to the website to see the content of this section of the site.

Every member has a login to the site. If you don't remember your login details go to https://www.offshoot.ie/login/ and select the 'Forgot your password?' link. Enter the email address you received this newsletter with and reset your password. Once you've reset your password you can login and catch-up on speakers you missed. Happy catching up!

Outings

Watch out for an email shortly from the Outings Committee regarding revised plans, taking the most recent Government announcements into account.

In the interim, our hardworking  Outings committee have compiled the following suggestions.

Ideas for personal photography outings while club outings are suspended.

Autumn Colours: there are plenty of parks/wooded areas/individual trees or shrubs/leaves to be photographed – but hurry – autumn is well underway. Squirrels are also plentiful as they collect and eat fallen nuts from beech trees especially.

Coastal images: for some members living within 5km of the Dublin coastline, there are endless possibilities: sunrise/sunset/seabirds/stormy conditions etc

Rivers also offer many opportunities to photograph wildlife: look out for birds especially: herons/kingfishers/wagtails/ dippers/ cormorants etc.

Dublin City: For those within 5kn of Dublin City the cityscape offers endless possibilities as well as street photography. Also many of our local villages have buildings or monuments of architectural interest. Again remember street photography.

Signs of Winter: frost/ snow/flooding/ bare trees etc

Moon: for those who missed the blue moon on October 31st there is a Full Moon every month. The next full moon is November 30th.

Weekly Flickr Theme: "Creative Selfie"

Remember to include the Theme Name at the start of the image title.

Weekly theme for week beginning Sat 28th Nov:

This week your challenge is to turn the camera on yourself.

Like many of the great masters of art, it's time to be your own subject. Look to them for inspiration here: famous-self-portraits

And here are some examples of self portaits in photography:creative-self-portrait-photography-ideas

And if you don't want to be in the photograph, why not make a still life that reveals something about you to us?

Upcoming themes will include the following:
