News

Last Monday Night

Last Monday we had an excellent presentation from the Netherlands from daughter and father Paula and Hendrik Kerstens on their wonderful work producing portraits in the style of Dutch and Flemish old masters.

Next Monday Night

Next Monday we will have the judging of our final club competition of 2021. Eamonn and Christine O’Daly from the Outdoor Studio will provide their feedback on the theme of Autumn Colours.

Please note: As we have a great level of entries to review, the meeting next Monday will commence at the earlier time of 19.30 (7.30pm)

AGM

The AGM of Offshoot Photography Society will take place on Monday 06 December 2021 at 8pm. Due to continuing Covid restrictions the meeting will be held by Zoom. Please make a special effort to attend.

We continue to seek members to serve on the committee in 2022. Without volunteers it may be necessary to restrict some of our activities – a measure we are very anxious to avoid. So please give serious consideration to how you might assist and indicate your interest as soon as possible to committee@offshoot.ie

Outings

Even if you are suffering from Zoom fatigue and are missing human interaction, you can still join other members on outings. Outings are a great way to socialise with fellow members, visit new places and even tale some photographs – so do come and join us!

Look at the schedule at the end of this Newsletter for Outings…..

Please note that registration for Outings will be continued to facilitate contact tracing in the event that we experience a Covid outbreak with the group.

Special Outing – Portrait Masterclass

Our last Portrait Masterclass was totally booked out so we have arranged another for you.

This is special because it’s indoors! This is an afternoon for beginners in the art of portraiture in a fully equipped studio with a model. It is on the afternoon of 22 January 2022 – it’s a Saturday and the number of attendees is limited to 10.

This session is filling up quickly so get your name on the list by emailing outings@offshoot.ie now.

Accessing Video Recordings of Meetings

Club Competitions

Judging this Monday night "Autumn Colours”

To give you some advanced warning, the first Club Competition for 2022 is proposed to be an Open Theme competition for Monochrome images. The entry date will be in late January – full details to follow in due course.

This Week's Flickr Theme

For those who may not have engaged with this yet here's how it works. Each week a theme/topic is set.

During the week you shoot or process an image in that theme. and load it on the Flickr site. One image will be selected as the "theme pic of the week" and published in the following week's newsletter.

Why bother? The theme pic gives you an opportunity to explore and try out many different styles and types of photography. It increases the variety of images on our site and is an excellent opportunity to expand your creativity and photography skills and you get your picture in the weekly newsletter!

Please note this is not a competition. The image chosen each is selected to encourage and inspire us. It may be the most technical but could also be selected as the most unusual, the most creative, the funniest or the one that appealed to us the most. The pictures are selected by a different member of the team each week to ensure varied viewpoints.

This week's theme is HDR.

High dynamic range photographs are useful when shooting in extremely contrasty light. An example would be shooting a portrait against a bright sky. If you expose the sky correctly the subject becomes a shadow, if you expose for the subject the sky burns out and becomes white. So take 2 shots on a tripod and blend the best of each for a HDR image.

We look forward to seeing your images. Don't forget to label your images on Flickr with the theme name.
