News

Last Monday Night

Labelled as ‘The Traveller his Images and Videos – Part 2’ we had another entertaining and enjoyable talk by Liam Haines. With his usual panache he took us around South America with his images and videos. With his inimitable humour he showed us the places and people.

Next Monday Night

Next week we have Joe Doyle (Malahide CC) as the judge of our next competition, Smartphone Photography. There is no doubt that the camera on the smartphone offers another photographic vehicle, which some members have embraced enthusiastically.  Cameras evolved from the camera obscura through many generations of photographic technology – daguerreotypes, calotypes, dry plates, film – to the modern day with digital cameras. As a camera club, we embrace them all.

We expected a novel approach to this competition so show us what you can do with a mobile ‘phone.

IPF National Shield Autumn 2021

The deadline for submissions for the IPF National Shield has now been notified as 29th October. We would now ask members to submit their images by the 30th of September to allow for the preparation of the Club's panels.

So members are now asked to gather images together for submission. A member can enter 5 colour images and 5 mono images for consideration.

Please look back over your current and back catalogue to choose your images. The images can be from any time period and any genre.

After the high standard set at the 2021 Club Championships, we look forward to seeing your submission.

Please upload your images to:

 Shoot With Me – Update

“What will happen within the next few days”.

First of all many thanks to our Group Leaders and to all who have applied for places in our twelve SWM groups.  The programme is almost full. All applicants got a place of their choice and over 90% of the applicants have got their first choice.

Our group leaders will receive the names and e-mail addresses of the members of their individual groups and the leaders will then make contact with their groups and set up their chosen communications methods. So if you have applied for a place you will be contacted by your Group Leader.

After that the groups will get started on their themes and, we expect, have a most enjoyable experience. We wish everyone involved good luck.

If you have any questions or if you don’t hear from anyone by the end of next week please contact either George or Emily at swm@offshoot.ie

Member Survey

Every year we ask members how we are doing, what we are not doing and what you would like us to do. Covid has played havoc with usual plans and activities and now we are coming back. It is so much better to air our views in person on a regular basis but, alas, this has not been possible so your comments are much more valuable.

We are sending you a link to the 2021 survey. Please, oh please, give it 5 minutes of your time.

Please complete the survey at: https://www.offshoot.ie/member-survey/

Chat Moderators Wanted

As most of you will know, Noreen, Marie and Richard have been doing the Zoom chat moderation since we went to virtual club meetings. They are happy to continue this role, but it would be good to get one or two other members involved to share out the rota. The work involved is minimal. If you would be willing to put your name forward please email secretary@offshoot.ie and we will contact you.

OffShoot Succession

We asked you in an email and last week’s newsletter for volunteers to serve on the committee in 2022. Sadly, the response has been disappointing.

OffShoot is a thriving club and our members are a great bunch of people and we want to look to the future and develop. This is your camera club and we have all sorts of roles; committees, subcommittees etc.; something for everybody willing to help. Everybody is important and it’s up to you how you want to help. Give it some thought and let us know.

THE AGM MUST NEITHER BE JUST A FORMALITY WITH POSITIONS ARRANGED BEFOREHAND NOR A SELECTION OF OFFICERS WHO HAVE ‘COME THROUGH THE RANKS’. THIS IS FOR EVERYBODY.

Please give it some thought and let us know before 31st October 2021 if you would be prepared to take a role on the committee. Please indicate your interest to committee@offshoot.ie.

Outings

The numbers limit on members attending outdoor events (Outings) is effectively lifted. Outings are a great way to socialise with fellow members, visit new places and even take some photographs so do come and join us.

However, registration for Outings will be continued to facilitate contact tracing in the event that we experience a Covid outbreak within the group.

Thoughts for today

“There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment.” — Robert Frank

“A portrait is not made in the camera but on either side of it.”
— Edward Steichen

“Beauty can be seen in all things, seeing and composing the beauty is what separates the snapshot from the photograph.”
— Matt Hardy
