News

Last Monday Night

Last Monday we had an inspiring presentation by Ellius Grace describing the development of his photography career over the past 7 years. He displayed great enthusiasm for his work and no little artistic and photographic skill.

Next Monday Night

Next Monday we will have something completely different. Three of our members, Kevin Grace, David Sisk and John Wiles, will demonstrate their approaches to editing their work using three different software packages. So join us on Zoom and get some interesting tips and tricks from our colleagues.

This Week's Flickr Theme

Theme of the Week: In the style of Ray Metzker

Considered one of the great masters of American photography, Ray Metzker is known for his vigorously experimental style, including his creation of “multiples”, assemblages of printed strips and single-frame images.  Metzker’s images are typically characterized by high contrast tones, dynamic angles, and precise compositions of line and shadow. He frequently experimented with multiple exposures and the juxtaposition of images. In an early work, Metzker printed a sequence of 25 images of the brightly lit landing at the base of a dark flight of stairs, presented as a single grid-like picture. Figures appear ascending or descending the stairs, to a rhythmic effect that recalls the photographic innovations of Eadweard Muybridge.

 He had several "styles"

1 high contrast black and white cityscapes often containing silhouette figures

2  Composites. Large black and white composites made from numerous high contrast images.

3 images of a beach shot from the walkway above

4 Images of the New Mexico desert

Pictus Interruptus series. By holding simple objects close to the camera's lens, he obscured part of the distant view. The resulting images visually unite sharp and out-of-focus forms, creating a provocative tension between photographic representation and abstraction.
