Last Monday John McComish gave us a very informative and thought-provoking presentation on the life and work of Robert Capa that was enjoyed by all!

Next Monday Night

Award-winning product photographer Neil Lennon will talk to us about Macro photography. His career began as a product photographer in Paris in 1994 and has spanned across Europe and North Africa to New York. We look forward to great images and an informative talk.

Club Competitions

Next Club Competition – “Monochrome”

There is one week to go before closing date (Sun 6th Feb) and the number of images entered as of now are very low.

Our next competition will be a Monochrome competition with an OPEN theme – which means using differing amounts of light instead of different colours to capture and represent images. It includes black and white but can also be achieved using varying shades of other colours like sepia or cyan.

You can interpret the theme as you wish from landscapes to people and anything in between. Street and architecture also work well in monochrome.

Our judge for this competition is Gerry Andrews FIPF, ARPS, AFIAP from Dublin Camera Club. (See note below)

You may submit two images for this competition to ensure everyone receives useful feedback in a reasonable timeframe.

This Week's Flickr Theme

This week's theme is another of the basic elements of photography: Texture

Textures are details that visually describe how something physically feels. Textures can be smooth, rough, and anything else your hand feels when it touches a surface. Depth of field, contrast and pattern all combine to create texture in photographs.

There is an endless range of subjects from macro to landscape: sand timber, skin, fur, leaves, rippled water or clouds. And don't forget smooth surfaces like metal or glass.

It is also possible to add a textured layer to a photograph to create a particular mood.

What is Flickr Theme of the Week?

This is not a competition rather an opportunity to learn a bit about an area of photography or try a different type of photography. The photo selected each week can be picked because it's technically excellent or equally because it's unusual, funny, creative or thought-provoking.

To enter your shots just upload from your Flickr page to the OffShoot Flickr page before 7 PM the following Friday. Please title your shot with the theme of the week + your own title.

Wishing you an enjoyable and educational 2022 from the Flickr theme pickers.

For those who may not have engaged with this yet here's how it works. Each week a theme/topic is set.

During the week you shoot or process an image in that theme. and load it on the Flickr site. One image will be selected as the "theme pic of the week" and published in the following week's newsletter.

Why bother? The theme pic gives you an opportunity to explore and try out many different styles and types of photography. It increases the variety of images on our site and is an excellent opportunity to expand your creativity and photography skills and you get your picture in the weekly newsletter!
