Club Outing – Iveagh Gardens

Our next outing is to the Iveagh Gardens. It has three access points: one through The National Concert Hall (walk through the car park keeping the building on your left), Hatch Street and Clonmel Street (off Harcourt Street).

Originally part of Leeson’s Fields, the land became the garden for Clonmel House before being made public and renamed Cobourg Gardens. Having become neglected, the gardens were bought in 1862 by Benjamin Lee Guinness to act as a garden for his townhouse. He later sold it at the price he’d paid for it so it could be developed as a recreational and cultural centre for Dublin’s citizens.

There is a “secret” gate from the Iveagh Gardens into the walled garden of the Museum of Literature, which has a nice café in its basement.

We’ll meet at 10.30 am at the Crossroads in the Centre of Iveagh Gardens
