Majestic Goliath Heron, Botswana, Africa
This enormous heron stands 1.5 meters tall and has a robust, dagger-like bill. The immature has rustier upperwings than the adult. Its flight is ponderous and labored. Goliath Heron inhabits large rivers, marshes, estuaries, and mangroves, hunting for large fish and other animals, stabbing them with an open bill. It has a distinct, barking “kowoork” call that can be heard from up to 2 km away. Purple Heron has similar plumage, but Goliath Heron is twice the size, has a much larger bill, and has a rufous (not blackish) top of the head.

Taken from the same location as the previous bog oak picture, looking towards the sunset. A beautifully calm evening (our only one!) and I loved the reflections of the reeds as well as the evening light.
Total Solar Eclipse, 8th April 2024
Image captured in Fredericksburg Tx USA. Sadly, conditions were less than ideal on the day with mostly overcast skies. However, during the 4+ mins of totality, we were lucky to catch one or two brief sights of the eclipse itself high in the sky.
The image shows a number of bright solar prominences visible in the corona around the sun.
Taken with 200mm lens on tripod, ISO 800 F5.6 1/6 sec (no filter).

I was fascinated by these pieces of bog oak(?) in a small lake just off the Roundwood Bog Road in Connemara back in March. In the twilight after the sun had set the whiteness of the wood really stood out.

Irish Hare early morning, County Mayo, West of Ireland
I lay in a wet field hoping it would come nearer to me. Hares are found throughout the world in a wide range of habitats. The Irish hare belongs to the species mountain hare Lepus timidus of which there are at least sixteen subspecies, the Irish hare being endemic to Ireland. Lepus timidus is widespread ranging from 75ºN (north Russia and Scandinavia) southwards to 40–50ºN. In Europe, Lepus timidus is found in Scotland, northern England, Scandinavia and in the European Alps.

Great Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus )
The thrush-sized warbler is one of the largest species of the former family, the Old World warblers and it stands as one of the largest species in the family Acrocephalidae. It measures 16–21 cm (6.3–8.3 in) in length, 25 to 30 cm (9.8 to 11.8 in) in wingspan and weighs 22 to 38 g (0.78 to 1.34 oz). The adult has unstreaked brown upperparts and dull buffish-white chin and underparts. The forehead is flattened, and the bill is strong and pointed. It looks very much like a giant Eurasian reed warbler (A. scirpaceus ), but with a stronger supercilium.
The sexes are identical, as with most old world warblers, but young birds are richer buff below.
The warbler's song is very loud and far-carrying and beautiful to listen to. The song's main phrase is a chattering and creaking carr-carr-cree-cree-cree-jet-jet, to which the whistles and vocal mimicry typical of marsh warblers are added.

A truly magical morning. Up early for the sunrise on a boat. The sun rose and graced me with its welcome presence as it lit up the lake with its gold hue while the spider web on the top of the tree cast a tapestry of woven gold. The joys of photography.
